John McAfee, the founder of antivirus company McAfee, has been found dead in a Spanish prison near Barcelona after the Spanish high court authorised his extradition to the United States

The Bristih technology entrepreneur reportedly commited suicide by hanging on Wednesday afternoon June 23, in a prison cell, just hours after a preliminary ruling for his extradition to the United States on charges of tax evasion.

The Catalan justice department confirmed in a statement that the likely cause of death is suicide, Reuters reported.

Employees at the Brians 2 penitentiary tried to revive the 75-year-old Mr McAfee but were unsuccessful, according to a statement cited by Spanish newspaper El Mundo and reporting by the Associated Press.

According to the newspaper El Pais, the software entrepreneur was arrested in October and was awaiting extradition to the US when he was found dead.

The paper added that police are investigating the circumstances surrounding his death.

Mr. McAfee had been charged with several federal financial crimes in two US districts. In the Western District of Tennessee, Mr McAfee was indicted in October on ten counts of allegedly evading taxes on millions of dollars of income.

In a Manhattan federal court in March, he was charged for a scheme involving cryptocurrency, which he was pushing on social media.

The charges carried a prison sentence of up to 30 years.

A statement from the regional Catalan government didn’t identify the American tycoon by name but said he was a 75-year-old US citizen awaiting extradition to the country.

Romance / 7 Reasons why men lose interest after sleeping with them
« on: June 23, 2021, 08:22:12 PM »

Some ladies may be having an affair with their lover, they had a great time together, but he is no longer answering his phone and looks to be unable to meet your demands. What caused that to occur? Many women have probably been in this situation and are left wondering why the male cut ties with them after sleeping with them. You may have fallen in love with him and desired to be in a relationship with him, but he vanished that night.

The following are some reasons why guys lose interest in you after sleeping with you:

1) He was never truly interested in you in the first place. The unfortunate reality is that he was never truly interested in you in the first place. He approached you and persuaded you that he loved you, but all he wanted to do is to sleep with you.

2) fear of a verbal brawl Some people lack the courage to express they no longer want to be in a relationship. They may want to leave the relationship for a variety of reasons, but the bottom line is that they lack the confidence to inform their partner. They lack the confidence to tell their lover they want to leave their relationship.

3) Unfavorable conditions In life, we are confronted with adverse situations that force us to put all of our personal obligations on hold in order to focus on the problem at hand. In such cases, we are forced to let go of whatever else appears to be important in order to handle the issues. This creates a schism between us and our loved ones, which can be expensive.

4) He is in love with someone else. He was in love with you for a while, but then he moved on and fell in love with someone else. You must embrace this truth and move forward. Our emotions are frequently beyond our control, and they can lead us to behave in unanticipated ways. Even though it looks unjust, you should be happy that he is not troubled by his feelings or influenced by your way of life.

5) He is afraid of making a commitment. There are many people who are in relationships but are scared to make a commitment. Commitment is essential in a relationship. You must also be mature enough to carry out your duties.

6.) He believes it was a mistake. Despite you value your time with him, he considers it a mistake. There could be specific reasons why he believes it was a mistake, but the truth is that he regrets doing it. He is repentant and wishes to separate himself from you.

7) He is no longer interested in you. He was captivated by you initially, and this was the reason for his courtship with you. He, on the other hand, has lost interest in you and intends to find love elsewhere.

You must never blame yourself if a man loses interest in you. You should never sell your soul for anything. Please share your experience in the comments section.

A UK police officer has been convicted of the manslaughter of the former footballer Dalian Atkinson, after firing an electric stun gun into him for 33 seconds and kicking him twice in the head.

PC Benjamin Monk, of the West Mercia force, was convicted of the killing by a jury at Birmingham crown court.

According to the Guardian, Monk was accused of lying in court about his account, and of kicking and stamping on Atkinson’s head while he was barely conscious on the ground.

Atkinson was kicked with such force his blood was found in the laces of Monk’s police-issue boots.

The jury reached its verdicts on Monk after 18 hours and 48 minutes of deliberation. They first acquitted him of murder, but then unanimously convicted him of manslaughter.

They are continuing to consider their verdicts on his co-accused, PC Mary Ellen Bettley-Smith, who denies actual bodily harm for striking Atkinson with a baton while he was on the ground.

Details of the unlawful violence the jury found Monk had used were only made public at trial almost five years after Atkinson’s death.

Atkinson, from Telford, Shropshire, was pronounced dead 70 minutes after the incident on 15 August 2016.

The former Aston Villa striker had gone to his childhood home in Meadow Close, which he had bought with the money he made from being a professional footballer, for his father Ernest. Shortly after 1.30am, a neighbour called the police because Atkinson, 48, was causing a disturbance.

In a statement after the verdict, the Atkinson family said: “We are hugely relieved that the whole country now knows the truth about how Dalian died.

“While it has been hard for us not to be able to talk about the details of Dalian’s death, it has been even harder to sit through this trial and to hear PC Monk try to justify the force he used.

“On the night he died, Dalian was vulnerable and unwell and needed medical attention. He instead received violence, and died with PC Monk’s boot lace prints bruised onto his forehead.

“We have been sickened to hear PC Monk try to minimise the force he used on Dalian and exaggerate the threat he posed. Fortunately, the jury has seen through the lies and the pretence. We would like to thank the jury members for all their hard work and attention.”

Atkinson achieved fame as a striker for Aston Villa, and also played for clubs in South Korea, Spain and Turkey. He retired from football in 2001.

The Jude Okeke-led National Working Committee (NWC) of APGA has suspended a former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and governorship aspirant, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo from the party for anti-party activities.

The decision was taken at the NWC meeting of the party which held on Tuesday night, June 22.

Speaking to newsmen in Abuja today, June 23, the acting national publicity secretary of the Jude Okeke-faction of the party, Ikechukwu Chukwunyere, said the party resolved to suspend Prof. Soludo and three other members due to their unrelenting effort at ensuring that the party is not united to focus on winning the governorship election, anti-party activities, administration of oath on party officials, bribery of party officials, sabotage, promotion of division, among others.

The NWC also applauded the members of the party in Anambra State who came out en-mass to the Ward offices across the 326 Wards in the state to elect the 3-man Ward delegates who would elect the Governorship candidate of the party come July 1.

“The Party is ready for the July 1 primary election and the winner will lead APGA to victory at the November 6th, 2021 Governorship election''Chukwunyere said

He described the purported Governorship primary election being held in Awka, the Anambra state capital, as a sham and effort in futility maintaining that in due time, the courts will declare it as invalid, unconstitutional, null, void, and of no effect whatsoever.

“The National Executive Committee of our Party has just finished meeting and has ratified the Delegates list for onward submission to INEC in line with the INEC Guidelines” he said

Saweetie is reportedly selling the customized Bentley given to her by ex Quavo following their messy break-up earlier this year.

The 27-year-old rapper put the Bentley her ex, 30, gave her late last year, up for sale via a Southern California dealership for $279,888, according to The Shade Room.

The outlet noted the similarities between the Bentley she posed with last year and one being sold by the San Diego dealership Jake's Motor Cars. The inscription on the front headrests that read, 'Icy' under a Bentley logo was also spotted.

An ad for the vehicle states that it is Imperial Blue with a V8 engine, automatic transmission, and 2,191 miles on it.

The news comes after Saweetie was seen on the Instagram account of Rolls-Royce rep Cassidy von Seggern posing next to a luxury car she had recently acquired.

President Muhammadu Buhari's media aide, Femi Adesina has said that his principal has nothing to do with the proposed amendment of the press council bill.

Many media stakeholders have kicked against the bill which seeks to repeal and re-enact the NPC act. According to these stakeholders, the bill is unconstitutional and will make it difficult for media houses to operate in an atmosphere of freedom and hold those in the position of authority to account.

Answering questions from state house correspondents after the weekly meeting of the federal executive council (FEC) in Abuja on Wednesday June 23, Adesina said only the minister of information and culture, Lai Mohammed can address the issues raised over the bill as it is a federal government initiative.

He said;

“That is not strictly a presidency thing because the president has nothing to do with that. It’s a government thing and it’s the minister that can talk about it. So, thank you."

Politics / PDP hits back at Presidency over attack on opposition govs
« on: June 18, 2021, 08:57:01 AM »

The Peoples Democratic Party( PDP), yesterday, berated the Presidency over comments that governors elected on its platform were peddling fake news.

The party in a statement by Kola Ologbondiyan,  described the comments by the Presidency as “un-presidential and pedestrian.”

He alleged it was President Muhammadu Buhari and the APC who came to power through fake news and falsehood and have been sustaining the vice in the past six years.

The party hinged  the attack on  PDP governors to pointing out failures of Buhari government and proffering solutions to challenges facing the country.

“It is on record that they (PDP governors) attend to the wishes of Nigerians in their respective states and do not by any whim, recourse to peddling of fake news and lies like the Buhari Presidency and his All Progressives Congress (APC)

“Nigerians will not forget how President Buhari and his party came to power by means of fake news, lies, falsehood, fake promises, deceit, beguilements and negative innuendos, a scope they have widened and deepened in the last six years.

“Recently, President Buhari openly resorted to false claims when he told Nigerians that his administration has pulled out 10.5million Nigerians out of poverty in the last two years, only for the World Bank to do a fact check and discovered that, to the contrary, 7.8 million Nigerians have rather been dragged below the poverty line in the last 12 months.

“It would also be recalled that in fishing for lies to justify its unwarranted ban on Twitter, the Buhari-led Federal Government alleged that Twitter makes ‘billions of naira’ in Nigeria, only for fact checks to reveal  the contrary. Nigerians have not forgotten how the Buhari administration scammed Nigerians with a non-existent national carrier for which billions of naira was funnelled out of the treasury in one of the biggest lies a government ever told its citizens.”

Meanwhile, the PDP has challenged the Economic and Financial Crime Commission (EFCC) to name the minister allegedly involved in  $37.5 million property scandal.

The party said the EFCC revelation was an indication that President Buhari’s anti-graft war is a circus show.

The opposition party noted that it was aware of how cabinet ministers, including those indicted for siphoning and diverting funds meant for parastatals and agencies under their purview were allegedly being shielded from prosecution.

Said Ologbondiyan: “Our party challenges the EFCC Chairman, Abdulrasheed Bawa, to name the said female minister and stop the famous process of easing out corrupt people in Buhari’s cabinet.  Nigerians are invited to note how ministers in the Buhari administration have not been prosecuted despite reports of seething treasury looting in the Treasury Single Account as well as revenue generating and controlling agencies such as Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, Nigerian Ports Authority, Federal Inland Revenue Service, National Emergency Management Agency, Niger Delta Development Commission and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, EFCC.”

Besides, the party added that it is appalled by media reports that the Federal Government has failed to pay the 774,000 youths recruited from the 774 local government areas across the country under the Extended Special Public Works.

A group, “Save Nigeria Now group,” has petitioned the President, Court of Appeal of Nigeria, accusing some government officials of trying to influence the judgement of the election petition tribunal.

The group made the allegation in a letter signed by its Chairman and Secretary, Etim Mfon and Ugan Ayim, respectively, dated June 4, 2021, titled “Petition against Cross River north senate election petition Tribunal in Calabar, in N50 million bribery.”

In the petition made available to Daily Sun, the group claimed that it had facts that N50 million was made available to bribe officials.

Save Nigeria Now Group alleged that the bribery move was to arm twist the members of the tribunal, to delay the process and ensure that the judgment expired, since they trusted the tribunal was populated by men of integrity who may be a hard-nut to crack.

The group revealed that the verdict of the tribunal expires on June 22, 2021, and called for the right thing to be done, so as to erase animosity that may arise, therefrom. The tribunal in a statement, has fixed today to deliver judgement.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors under the auspices of Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) said the party is waiting for President Muhammadu Buhari to approve the proposal for the conduct of its national convention.

Speaking to newsmen after the Forum’s meeting in Abuja, PGF Chairman, Abubakar Atiku Bagudu, disclosed that after making input into the timetable and schedule of activities from the Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee, they can only wait for the approval of the president.

“We considered the timetable and we have made some inputs particularly to comply with the Electoral Law and the party’s constitution. Remember we (PGF) are just one organ of the party (though a very important organ) but we advised the Caretaker Committee to ensure they consult with all so that at the end of the day, the final output will be such that all party members will be happy.”

Asked if they considered a specific date, he said there was a proposal before the president and once he approves it, the National Caretaker Committee will announce the date.

The All Progressives Congress (APC), Kano State chapter, has slammed a 12 month suspension on House of Representatives Committee Chairman on Security, Sha’aban Sharada.

His suspension, which was announced by the party chairman, Kano Municipal Local Government Area, Sani Maifata and his secretary, Kamilu Bala, accused the embattled politician, who is former aide to President Muhammad Buhari, of anti-party activities.

The suspension letter said Sharada was found guilty of charges preferred against him, adding that he had been assassinating the character of the  Governor of Kano State and party executives from ward, local government to state level.

The party at his ward level said they had to act fast to suspend the lawmaker because his actions “may instigate chaos and turmoil in the state, which may disrupt and derail the positive mission of the governor.”

The APC said it acted on the basis of the petition written against the legislator by APC supporters in his Sharada ward adding that it set up a seven member disciplinary committee which investigated the petition against him and came up with its findings asserting his wrongdoings.

The suspension letter was copied to President Muhammed Buhari,  Governor  Abdullahi Ganduje,  Speaker of the House of Representatives and national secretariat of the APC.

Politics / Tinubu hails Akeredolu over Appeal Court victory
« on: June 18, 2021, 08:29:26 AM »

Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, congratulated Ondo Governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu and his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, for the Court of Appeal judgment affirming their victory in the governorship election in the state.

The former Lagos Governor, in a statement described the appellate court’s verdict as clear endorsement of the judgment of the election petitions tribunal.

“More importantly, the Appeal Court decision stands for the vital proposition that the rule of law serves to protect the sovereign will of the people when expressed in free and honest elections. By this judgement, the appellate court clearly shows that Governor Akeredolu and Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa were the candidates who the people of Ondo choose to pilot their affairs for the next four years. The confidence the people repose in the Akeredolu administration has been well earned and should be wholly respected. I urge Governor Akeredolu to continue to strive and do his utmost in the service of his state and for the welfare of all the people therein, political friend and foe alike.”

Tinubu said the opposition PDP and its candidate, Mr. Eyitayo Jegede, have exercised their constitutional rights by challenging the election results via the legal process.

“They have fought a good fight but that process and fight are now over. It’s time to now place partisan politics on the shelf for the moment so that these former political contestants can join hands as much as possible for the good and development of Ondo State. I encourage Governor Akeredolu to also be a unifier who casts his net widely and also provides an open door to all who sincerely want to contribute to the wellbeing of the state and its proud and decent people.”

Leaders/Ministers Forum (ACLMF), has made a U-turn and declared its readiness to support the incumbent Governor Bababjide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s candidacy, if given the nod by the leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State to contest for a second term in office.

National president of ACLMF, Rev. Sam Ogedengbe, who briefed journalists on Wednesday immediately after the joint national monthly meeting of the forum at their Abule-Egba, Lagos headquarters, declared that, sometimes, politics could be by religion and, sometimes, might be through promises made and kept by the chosen candidate.

He maintained that immediately after the state’s general meeting of the forum on June 2, 2021, with the presence of all local government coordinators, it was agreed that, considering level and speed of work and performance of the present governor in all local governments in the state, they should not be ingrates to the performing, listening and all-encompassing governor, rather, they should all rally round him as a show of support and encouragement, hence the resolve of the national body to formally throw their weight behind him for a second term, to further complete his good, notable, feasible and industrious performance.

He said there is no doubt that the governor has proved all the doubting Thomasses wrong with the way he is touching every nook and cranny of Lagos State, which, according to him, has turned the entire state and its environs to another beautiful  and remarkable construction arena.

“During our state’s general meeting in Lekki on June 2, 2021, with all the local government coordinators in attendance, the All Christian Leaders and Ministers Forum agreed that we would support Sanwo-Olu for the second term because he has performed creditably, especially with a lot of visible transformation agenda and we believe that he has a lot of projects that need to be completed, which by all indications cannot be completed within the period of the remaining two years.

“I need to lay emphasis that Sanwo-Olu has performed beyond reasonable doubts. That is why we tarry till today in front of the entire executive and national coordinators of of this forum, ACLMF, to make a bold U-turn and announce to the entire world that we will support him for a second term,” Ogedengbe said.

Ogedengbe, former Senior Assistant to the Lagos State Governor on Christian Religion, said, after his tenure of eight years, another credible candidate could take over, by by God’s grace.

Politics / Politics, intrigues, reality of Twitter ban
« on: June 18, 2021, 08:20:10 AM »

On Friday, June 4, Nigerians and the world indeed, were taken aback, when the Federal Government, through the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, announced the suspension of all operations of the social media giant, Twitter. According to the minister, the government action was based on its understanding that the platform was being used for activities capable of undermining Nigeria’s corporate existence.

The action came barely two days after Twitter deleted a controversial post by President Muhammadu Buhari, where he made reference to the country’s civil war, and threatened to deal ruthlessly with those attacking public institutions in the country.

The President’s tweet that aroused the anger of Nigerians read: “Many of those misbehaving today are too young to be aware of the destruction and loss of lives that occurred during the Nigeria civil war. Those of us in the fields for 30 months, who went through the war, will treat them in the language they understand.”

Some people saw the President’s tweet as a veiled threat to massacre the Igbo just like the Nigerian government did before and during the civil war between 1967 and 1970, when an estimated three million Igbo were wantonly killed. The tweet immediately triggered series of negative comments from Nigerians at home and in the Diaspora.

Following the widespread anger and condemnation that trailed the post by millions of Twitter users from Nigeria and across the world, coupled with the fact that the tweet, according to the micro-blogging site, breached its rule number four, it was left with no choice but to delete the post.

However, barely 48 hours after the tweet was deleted, the Nigerian government released its sledge hammer as it swiftly banned the social media network, claiming that it was pursuing a sinister agenda in Nigeria; and by Saturday morning, many Nigerians could no longer access Twitter except through a Virtual Private Network (VPN).

This move promptly drew the ire of not only Nigerians, but also the diplomatic missions of Canada, the European Union, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom and the United States, as they promptly condemned the government’s action, saying it was an assault on the fundamental human rights of free expression and access to information as a pillar of democracy in Nigeria.

The foreign bodies further stressed that the measure inhibits access to information and commerce, especially at a time when Nigeria needs to foster inclusive dialogue and expression of opinions, as well as share vital information on the COVID-19 pandemic.

The open condemnation by the five foreign missions in Nigeria did not go down well with the government as it immediately summoned them to a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, probably to give more explanation to the position they took. But, the foreign missions reiterated their earlier stand that the government’s action was an infringement on the people’s right to freedom of expression. The minister had told them during the meeting that Nigeria was already in talks with Twitter, even as he could not give a specific date when the suspension would be lifted. He insisted that a platform, which has the power to disseminate information among billions of people, must equally exercise such powers with a great deal of responsibility.

Different strokes for different folks

Just as the foreign missions made their position known, reactions from local and international organisations, professional bodies, politicians, as well as Nigerians from all walks of life have continued to trail the government’s action. The Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), the Amnesty International, the Media Rights Agenda (MRA), the International Press Centre (IPC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Chief Mike Ozekhome, literary giant and Nobel Laureate, Wole Soyinka, among others have all condemned the government’s action.

Some Nigerians view the government’s action as nothing but a clear violation of the citizens’ rights to freedom of expression, as clearly enshrined in the 1999 constitution; and a desperate move to erode one of the very important ingredients of democracy – free speech.

There are those who believe that the government’s action has presented the country in a bad light and ridiculed it before the international community. Those who hold this view also express concern that such negative image for the country would further affect foreign direct investment as no investors would ordinarily like to invest in a country where citizens’ free speech is not guaranteed.

Yet, there are those who believe that the government’s action was a confirmation that the presidency is equating the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, with President Buhari. Proponents of this opinion are quick to buttress their argument with a statement credited to the information minister, Lai Mohammed, who lamented that Twitter chose to ignore the inciting messages from the proscribed secessionist group’s leader, but was quick to enforce its rules on the president.

The NBA President, Olumide Akpata, described the government’s action as a flagrant move to infringe upon the rights of Nigerians to freely express their constitutionally guaranteed opinions through Twitter, since there is no Nigerian law that could be cited in support of the ban.

The Amnesty International (AI) also agreed that the suspension of Twitter in Nigeria has violated the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Nigeria is a signatory to. It described the government’s action as unlawful and a deliberate move to gag the media, repress the civic space, and undermine Nigerians’ human rights.

Nigeria’s main opposition political party, the PDP, also described the suspension as a vexatious, condemnable and barbaric move to muzzle Nigerians, particularly the youths.

The MRA and the IPC condemned the ban and even threatened to drag the government before the appropriate agencies of the African Union and United Nations if the ban was not suspended immediately, arguing that it was a violation of the rights of Nigerians to freedom of expression and access to information even as it contravenes the relevant instruments of both agencies.

The United States of America has also condemned the suspension and subsequent threats to arrest and prosecute Nigerians who use Twitter, and called on the government to respect citizens’ right to freedom of expression by reversing the suspension. It also expressed concern over the National Broadcasting Commission’s order to all television and radio broadcasters to cease using Twitter.

The US Government said unduly restricting the ability of Nigerians to report, gather, and disseminate opinions and information has no place in a democracy, insisting that freedom of expression and access to information, both online and offline, were foundational to prosperous and secure democratic societies.

Another bombshell

However, just when Nigerians were beginning to come to terms with the suspension, having quickly resorted to the alternative App, VPN, to be able to access Twitter, the Federal Government again dropped another bombshell. This time, it was the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, warning that those who are still using the social media site by whatever means would be arrested, prosecuted and punished accordingly.

The warning sparked another cycle of anger among Nigerians. Politicians, organisations, as well as professional groups, particularly those in the legal profession, who have consistently asked to be shown the part of the law which the AGF wants to rely on in this regard, have all been reacting to Malami’s order. But, the AGF through his Special Assistant on Media and Public Relations, Dr. Umar Gwandu, has kept the answers under wraps, hence keeping the lawyers in the dark. He has adroitly maintained that defaulters would know the section of the law that will be used to prosecute them when they appear in court.

The AGF’s latest order came on the heels of his alleged advice to the President to suspend the constitution and declare martial law in Nigeria. Although, he has denied ever contemplating such idea let alone giving it to Mr. President, some Nigerians are linking the advice with his latest order to arrest those still using Twitter, insisting that it has just confirmed the rumour that he actually gave such advice to the president. They are of the view that arresting and prosecuting anybody found to be using Twitter after the government has banned it in Nigeria without any section of the law backing such action, amounts to suspending the constitution and applying the martial law.

However, some state governors, federal lawmakers as well as prominent clerics have openly dared the attorney general to arrest them as they continued to use the social media platform. They argued that the minister’s mere pronouncement does not amount to a law, insisting that by using Twitter, they have not breached any part of the country’s law.

Position of law

The recent government’s threat to prosecute violators of the ban even with Twitter’s promise of working to restore its network in Nigeria, has thrown a lot of Nigerians into confusion with many wanting to know exactly what the position of the law is. Does the attorney general have the powers to prosecute violators as he threatened? And under which law would he do that?

Rights activist and former second Vice President of the Nigeria Bar Association, Monday Ubani, said that the Twitter ban was unconstitutional in the first place because it violates the freedom of expression. He went further to state that since the president has not suspended the provisions of the constitution that give Nigerians freedom of expression as their fundamental human rights, he cannot take away such rights from Nigerians.

On the orders to arrest and prosecute those flouting the ban, maybe by using other means to access Twitter, Ubani said it was a provocative statement that has no place in law.

He doubted if the AGF actually gave such orders and advised that he should begin to look for another country if he actually gave such orders because Nigerians would not allow such oppressive, dictatorial tendency to take effect. Another lawyer and President of the Association for the Protection and Defence of Human Rights (APDHR), Eric Igweokolo, also took a swipe at the government’s action, even as he corroborated Ubani’s argument. He said: “The purported ban of Twitter by the Federal Government of Nigeria does not create any offence known to Nigeria law under which any person can be prosecuted in court. In section 36(12) of the 1999 Constitution, the law provides that for a person to be arrested, detained or prosecuted for a criminal offence, there must be a written law; the offence must be defined in written law and penalty thereof must be prescribed as well as coexist.”

“The attorney general cannot make a written law because it is the legislature that makes laws. For the use of Twitter to be a criminal offence, the legislature must make a written law, wherein what constitutes an offence, and the punishment for such an offence are clearly defined.

The International Labour Organisation (ILO) has called on buyers of Nigerian gold and cocoa products, to be mindful of the impact of their patronage on the use of child labour on gold mines and cocoa farms, as well as the consequences on social stability and collective development.

Specifically, the ILO Country Director for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, and the Liaison Office for ECOWAS, Vanessa Phala, made the call in Abuja, during the inaugural National Children’s Conference on the Elimination of Child Labour (NCCECL) themed “Act Now: End Child Labour”.

The conference was in commemoration of the 2021 World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) in Nigeria, with support from the Netherlands Government-funded ILO ACCEL Africa Project and Tripartite partners.

Phala warned that if Nigeria does not quicken its pace to eliminate child labour, the country may not succeed in meeting the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Target 8.7, which seeks the elimination of all forms of child labour by 2025.

“Let us ask ourselves, are we empowering the unfair use of children in cocoa farms, on gold mines, at home, in factories, in marketplaces, and in society generally?… are we a part of the cure or the disease?’’, she asked.

She noted that a joint ILO and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) research released on June 10, puts the number of children trapped in child labour in 2020 at 160 million, with 92 million in Africa.

She explained that this was a surge from the 152 million recorded in 2016, signalling a potential rise over a short period, owing to the economic consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meanwhile, the ILO ACCEL Africa Project is focused on accelerating action against child labour in the cocoa and Artisanal Gold Mining (ASGM) supply chains in Ondo and Niger states specifically, where child labour is prevalent through production and supply chains.

This debut NCCECL was coordinated by members of the Nigerian Children’s Parliament, children from public and private schools across Nigeria, ex-child labour victims, and children currently trapped in labour, with support from the ILO and its tripartite partners.

The partners include the Nigeria Employer’s Consultative Association (NECA), Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development and other government agencies.

In a communique, Chukwuma Chioma, Speaker of the FCT Children’s Parliament, called for the ratification of ILO Convention 189 on domestic work, domestication of Recommendation 201 into national laws to protect children from servitude, implementation of the Action Pledges by ILO’s tripartite partners and the immediate passage of the Labour Standard Bill, which criminalises the List of Hazardous Child Labour

She also called for the upward review of the national minimum wage, inclusive, compulsory, and universal basic education for every Nigerian child, provision of Safe Shelters in each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas, review of the child adoption policy in consideration of the high number of orphans, and domestication and full implementation of the Child Rights Act 2003 by the remaining 11 states.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Dr. Yerima Tarfa responded to the concerns by advocating climate action, increased reporting of child labour cases to law enforcement agencies, and the domestication/implementation of the Child Rights Act 2003 in every state.

Yerima also cited the Labour Ministry’s planned review of Nigeria’s labour laws, an increase in the number of labour officers and factory officers to monitor workspaces and schools, the federal government’s provision of free basic education, school feeding programme and other poverty alleviation schemes as some of the government’s efforts to eliminate child labour.

The governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal, on Thursday, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari not to abdicate his constitutional responsibility as the Commader-in-Chief of the Federation in the fight against insecurity in the country.

The Governor said this in reaction to a statement credited to the Presidency which blamed state Governors for security lapses in their respective states.

The Governor told a gathering of youths under the auspices of the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN), commemorating the 2021 Democracy Day at the International Conference Center, Kasarawa, Sokoto, that the constitution puts the issue of security under the exclusive legislative list of the federal Government.

Tambuwal explained that as a Governor, if he gives a particular directive to the Garrison Commander, Director SSS, or any commander in the paramilitary forces, they have to clear from Abuja.

He stressed that those bosses they are answerable to must in turn report to the President who is the Commander in Chief as stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He said the president should address the prevailing security challenges in the country, saying as governors they are ready to compliment and support whatever effort is being made by the Federal Government in re-establishing security in their respective states.

”All the Governors are working tirelessly towards complimenting him (the President) the service chiefs, and the service personnel that are on ground,” Tambuwal, who also doubles as the Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) and the Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDP GF) noted.

Observing that Nigeria is a great country that must not be destroyed, the Governor emphasized that its unity is fundamental and important, thus the need to nurture and harness the potentials of its teeming youths for the responsibility of leading today and tomorrow.

He stated that this is why his administration has been investing in education and agriculture so as to give the youths the competitive advantage of not only being responsible citizens but also being versatile global citizens.

He, however, observed that agricultural undertakings are now precarious as a result of the challenges of funding and insecurity.

No fewer than 13 persons sustained various degrees of injuries on Thursday night following a Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) tanker explosion at Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, opposite Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Ikeja.

About 25 cars were also destroyed as a result of the explosion which occurred at about 10.32 p.m.

This was confirmed on Friday by Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, Acting Zonal Coordinator, South West Zonal Office, National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in Ikeja.

Farinloye said the explosion threw the environment into panic due to the huge fire caused by the incident.

He said the explosion was alleged to have been caused by leakage while the LPG tanker was in motion.

“The resulting fire travelled with the wind to the premises of Ogun State Property Investment Company (OPIC) Plaza besides Sheraton Hotels, which houses different commercial outfits including a Chinese Restaurant.

“The fire was put out at about 12.30 a.m., after concerted efforts of five fire trucks from the Lagos State Fire Service and two trucks from the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency Response Unit.

“The initial search and rescue activities revealed that 13 persons sustained various degrees of burns. Out of this, nine are males while four are females,” Farinloye said.

He further disclosed that the affected victims were attended to at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) for First Aid.

He said four of the victims with severe injuries were later transfered to the Trauma and Burns Centre at Gbagada General Hospital, Lagos.

“Preliminary assessment of vehicles damaged indicated that about 25 were destroyed as at now.

“Comprehensive post disaster assessment on the extent of general damages would be done later today,” Farinloye added.

He said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, Mr Hakeem Odumosu, led the team which took charge of crowd control and helped to restore normalcy.

Politics / I feel safer in Maiduguri than in Abuja - Senator Ndume
« on: June 18, 2021, 08:07:05 AM »

Senator Ali Ndume has said that he feels safer in Maiduguri in spite of the continous attacks by insurgents, than in Abuja, the nation's capital.

The Chairman of the Senate Committee on Army made the claim while appearing on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday June 17.

Ndume who noted that security has improved in Maiduguri, disclosed that it is only outside the Borno state capital that insurgents are marauding around and attack intermittently.

He said;

“I live in Abuja and also live in Maiduguri. Once I come to Maiduguri, I feel safer than in Abuja, because somebody can knock down your door with a gun. In Maiduguri, we don’t hear of that.

“It is outside Maiduguri where the insurgents are marauding around and attack intermittently. And that’s normal with insurgents, that’s why they are called insurgents, they do hit and run on soft targets.

“In every society, you can’t wipe out criminality completely. In America, there is school shooting. Our own is that we have known terrorists and the army is fighting them.”

Ndume also described Buhari’s visit as a boost to the morale of the troops on the battlefront.

He added;

“The President went round for six hours – I was tired. He came in 10 o’clock and we were going to see various projects until four o’clock this evening before he left."
