In South Western Nigeria, there is a type of vegetable soup we, the Yoruba called "EFO RIRO". This type of vegetable is essentially cooked by mixing Spinach with spices and an assorted garnish of meat, cray fish, dried fish and other delicacies.

You can serve it with pounded yam, Eba, Fufu (Igbo called it Apu), Amala, Rice or to whatever you desire.

So, In this article, am going to teach you how to prepare this Yoruba vegetable; I will tell you the ingredients needed and the steps for the preparation of this delicious vegetable.

First of all, The Ingredients required:
To prepare efo riro, you need 400g or two bunches of spinach vegetable (Efo Tete in Yoruba).

Blended Bonney Pepper (called Ata rodo in Yoruba, also known as scotch bonnet, Caribbean red pepper) with onions.

5 or more fresh Tomatoes.

8 or more Red Chili Peppers.

Boiled seasoned Crab or Snails/Shrimps.

Boiled assorted Meat (Beef parts).

Smoked Stock Fish.

Dry Stock Fish.


300ml Palm oil.

Knor/Salt or other seasoning.

Now let us go to the kitchen and prepare our efo riro, the first step is to fry four cooking spoons of palm oil in a deep cooking pot, put sliced onions after the oil is extremely hot.

Efo Tete or Spinach

The next step is to now add the blended pepper, small red chili pepper, half a clove of chopped garlic and ginger, then cook for ten minutes.

Now, after ten minutes, add all the ingredients , sliced tomatoes, boiled beef, cray fish, stock dry fish, assorted meat, shrimps, crab/snail, periwinkle, Knor/salt or any other seasoning and cook for 5 minutes.

The last step now is to add the spinach vegetable, stir together and cook further  for 2 minutes.

Our tasty EFO RIRO is ready to be serve with Fufu/Apu, Pounded Yam, Eba or Amala and can be eating alone.
