Federal High Court, Abuja, has finally fixed the trial of 12 detained Igboho's aides, on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.
As reported by Punch, one of the the counsels for the applicants, Pelumi Olajengbesi, disclosed that some Judges have been avoiding/dodging the case because of the sensitive nature of the case.
Pelumi revealed that the case had earlier been assigned to about two Judges, but both of them declined taking up the case. But the trail was able to be fixed when another Judge later offered to take up the case.
In his words, he said: "in fact, two judges initially declined to take up the suit when it was assigned to their courts; but it was taken up by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of the Federal High Court 9, Abuja."
Recall that the Department of State Security (DSS) had, on July 1, 2021, raided the residence of the Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, at the Soka area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
The raid was alleged to be a bloody one as about 2 persons were reportedly gunned down by the DSS; while about 12 of Igboho's aides were arrested.
Many wondered why the DSS could kill Igboho's aides during the raid, but reports had it that the Igboho's aides on sighting the DSS at the residence, engaged them in a gun duel.
It was in the course of the gun battle between Igboho's men and the DSS, that the two persons were gunned down; while others were subdued and arrested.
In the course of the raid, several dangerous weapons were reportedly recovered from Igboho's house. Among the weapons and items recovered were: Seven (7) AK-47 assault rifles; 3 Pump Action guns; 30 fully charged AK-47 magazines; 5,000 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition; 5 Cutlasses; 1 Jack knife; 1Pen Knife; 2 Pistol holsters; 1 binoculars; his Charms; and so on.
It is of no doubt that these were illegally possessed arms, that really need to be queried by the Government. Not only this, it is really of high criminal offense to have engaged the Nigerian security agents on gun duel.
In this regard, the federal government later resorted to placing Igboho on a wanted list. Meanwhile, the federal government has ordered the security agents to arrest Igboho anywhere they see him.
