Lawmakers of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the National Assembly opened a Twitter Account in defiance to the micro blogging platform ban by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammad Buhari. This news was released a few hours after the members of the party staged a walkout, over the action of the government.
On Friday, 4th June 2021, the president Muhammad Buhari had sent a message on the 'Twitter ban' through his media aide, Segun Adeyemi. The ban by the Nigerian government came days after a post by the president about the 1967 civil war was deleted by the micro blogging platform.
On the other hand, the Nigerian government's spokesman cited that the reason for the ban was as a result of the persistent use of the platform for activities that are capable of undermining Nigerian's corporate existence.
The lawmakers on Tuesday staged the walkout after its caucus leader Kingsley Chinda was ruled out of order by the speaker of the House, Femi Gbajabiamila. Chinda had urged the federal government to suspend the ban while the house conducts its investigations on the legality of the ban.
The speaker, however, cited part of the standing orders of the House, stating that a matter that has been concluded by the parliament cannot be revisited for a debate.
The Speaker, therefore, ruled the Lawmakers out of order, a decision that did not go down well with some members of the opposition who walked out of plenary.
On this note, Chinda insisted that the members of the PDP Caucus in the House will continue to Tweet in disregard to the ban.
On Wednesday, being 9th June 2021, the Lawmakers opened a new Twitter account, known as @ 9th PDP Caucus.
